Promoting Environmental Education and Awareness Environmental Conservation Through Most At-Risk Communities
At the Organization for Safer Globe Conservation Trust (SGCT), we prioritize environmental conservation efforts within the most vulnerable and at-risk communities. One of our key initiatives is the promotion and construction of energy-efficient household cookstoves, such as the “two-stick stove.” These stoves have been well-received in the communities we serve, significantly reducing firewood consumption and harmful emissions.
We train groups of men and women to construct these stoves, which are then built in each member’s home through collaborative group work. This model not only conserves energy but also strengthens community cohesion. Recognizing that schools and institutions in Uganda are among the largest consumers of firewood, we have extended this initiative to schools by constructing at least one large energy-saving stove per institution.

Our focus goes beyond just planting trees; we emphasize their growth and survival as key success indicators of our interventions.

SGCT Thematic Areas

Tree Planting and Nursery Development
To combat environmental degradation and the ongoing loss of forest cover, we launched the “Kuza Omuti” (Grow a Tree) initiative. Under this program, we establish community-based tree nurseries accredited by the National Forestry Authority to produce fast-growing indigenous tree species. These nurseries provide affordable seedlings to farmers, allowing them to plant trees over large areas. Our focus goes beyond just planting trees; we emphasize their growth and survival as key success indicators of our interventions. By supporting community access to tree seedlings, we help meet essential needs such as firewood, construction materials, and timber, thereby
reducing pressure on natural forests.

Riverbank and Watershed Protection
SGCT also conducts community sensitization campaigns on the importance of conserving river and stream banks. These efforts are vital in preventing rivers from bursting their banks, a growing problem that leads to flooding, property damage, and loss of livelihoods. Through
awareness and advocacy, we empower communities to adopt practices that protect water bodies and restore ecological balance.
